How often do you visit your own country as an expat?
Challenges of visiting home when living in Greece
Let me start by apologising for the lack of an Expats Greece newsletter last week.
The reason, was that I had to make a trip back to the UK for a few days.
I tend to go back for 5 days at a time twice a year, normally outside of the summer months as the flights are more reasonably priced then.
This was an additional unplanned visit though - these things do happen! I flew out of Naxos on the first leg of the journey - it has to be one of the smaller airports in Greece!
Whether you live in Greece now or plan to in the future, how to visit your home country, and how often, is something you might need to think about.
For sure I know people who have cut all ties with the country of their birth, but realistically speaking, most people will need to factor in getting back from time to time.
Weddings, funerals, aging parents, friends, or even shopping can all be reasons to go back home for a few days. And as such, if you are working out what your budget for living in Greece might be like, this is something that is important to include.
Over in the Facebook group, there’s been a few interesting posts about buying cars. If you’re interested, take a search there to find out more. Note that automatic cars are super rare in Greece.
Finally, as the weather warms up (it’s heatwave time!), the mosquitoes will start to come out to play a little more. A recent thread asked what is the best way to stop them. Here’s a fuller article in dealing with mosquitoes in Greece you might also want to read.
Cheers,
Dave
